This antique scale model of the window and cornice of the ambassador’s hall in the Alhambra is attributed to D. Rafael Contreras who was named “adornista restorer” of the Alhambra in 1847 and director and curator in 1869. Among his most notable interventions is the reconstruction of the Hall of beds, where he attempted to restore the color without success, between 1848 and 1866.
While his contributions to the Alhambra were attempts to increase its ornamenal and exotic nature, historians recollect that they were not without controversy. Contreras built a workshop to experiment with different plasters while creating these scale models of different areas of the Alhambra. The scale models are scarce and highly sought after by collectors.
The inscription on the back of the model reads:
Window and Cornice of the Ambassador’s Hall, in 1/12th scale
Only God is victorious. Blessings, Happyness
Model collection of the Alhambra, original from D. Rafael Contreras, restorer of the Alhambra.
